Red steam.

I don’t want to put a title to my post because when I start typing, stuff just pours out of my head and my fingers type it.  Or I have lots to say and when I start to type, the stuff does not seem so interesting as it did in my head.

beets-001I did take a picture of the beets we canned.  I don’t know why they call it canning when it is jarring.

That was a process.  Hubby weighted the beets.  They weighed 19.8 pounds.  Some were really big.  You have to wash them and then put them in a pot of water and cook them till they are tender.  We had four pots going.  It took forever to cook because the beets were so big they didn’t get tender.  I put some in my pressure cooker and they cooked pretty good.  I could only get 6 beets in the cooker.  The thing is though, that the water turns RED.

When you let the steam out of the pressure cooker, the steam is Red.  I had to take it outside to let the steam out.  It was raining outside at the time.  I am in the doorway of my garage,  I have the pot just outside of the doorway.  I press the thing on top to let out the hot, hot steam.  Pssssssssssssssssssss.  It is spewing like a geyser.  Red liquid steam is shooting all over me and the porch and the pot and the garage floor.  I stop it and grab some paper towels and kind of cover the spray.  The only thing is though that it gets soaked and it is hot.  So I finally get the steam out of the pot and then have to wipe off the pot, which is still hot.  I wipe off the floor and the door jam and my arms.  I take it back inside and take out the hot beets and put in more beets in the pot.  I take it back outside and plug it in and start that one cooking.  Meanwhile the beets in the house and bubbling away on the stove and boil over and cover the stove in red and then it burns onto the white glass-top stove that I have.  We finally got them all cooked.  Then you have to peel the skin off, while they are hot.  Then you cut them up into bite size pieces.  You get the jars washed and put them in this giant pot on the stove to get hot.  Make the liquid for the beets and cook it and put in the beets and cook that some more and then put them into the jars and then clean up the giant mess all over thbeets-014e place.

Today we went and bought a big, big pot to cook them in next time.  We also ordered a 23 qt pressure canner cooker.  I am going to do beans when they grow.  I hope they grow.  The seeds started to come up yesterday.  My beets sprouted.  We have had rain for 4 days now and the garden is loving it.

My garden is done.

002I bought over 100 bags of top soil for my garden.  We have red clay dirt here.  It is hard like a brick.  I bought good dirt.  Those are 40 pound bags and they do not go very far.  I would go to Ace Hardware and get 12 bags put in the back of my vehicle and drive them home.  Hubby would unload them and send me back for 12 more.  I did get 20 bags at Wal-Mart but the dirt was not that good of stuff.  It was more clay in it so I didn’t buy any more from them.  Towards then end of when I was going, the guys that load it in my vehicle would not come out to put it in my car.  The last trip , no one came out to help me.  I had to go back in to get someone to put it in my car.  When you buy it at the cash register the cashier says into a little microphone to get someone out to count it out and put it in your vehicle.  They probably just ignored it the last time.  I told one guy “I have bought a lot of this soil from your store.”  He was nice once he came out but it took him a long time to come out.  One time I went and I didn’t count the bags and they only gave me 9 bags instead of 12.  I called the store and they added on 3 more bags that they shorted me, on the next trip.  I am glad it is done.  I was getting tired of making the trip.  I planted it and that took a couple of days.  It was so hot out when I was doing it.  It was 90 degrees.  My plants didn’t like the heat, they looked wilted.  My husband put in a pipe to the water and we bought a 75 foot soaker hose for it.  Now all I have to do is turn it on and it will water my whole garden.  001                                                                                                                                             This is my gardenplanted.  This is before the soaker hose.  It has been raining all day so I didn’t take a picture of it yet.

I planted pole beans, beets, onions, tomatoes, zuccinni, squash and Acorn squash.  Oh and Brussels Sprouts.  I love those fresh grown.  I don’t really like them frozen.

My one pole bean was really tall.  It fell over and broke because of the heat.

I also got another tomato cage yesterday.  I now have 5 tomato plants.  I do love tomatoes.

My neighbors across the street were planting those upside down tomatoes.  I don’t know how those will do.  You just buy regular tomato plants and put them in this green plastic bag and hang them upside down.  I will have to ask her how they are doing in a month.  I am curious.

Stuff for my garden

My garden from last year was  pretty good.  I only grew tomatoes and peppers and onions.  I want to grow more this year so my husband made my garden area twice as big.  I dug up all the old dirt and raked it around the entire area.  I needed a lot more soil.  I went to Ace hardware and bought 17 bags of top soil and hubby poured it out of the bags and raked it around.  We then went to Wal-mart and bought 20 bags of their top soil.  Hubby raked it around.  The Wal-mart soil is not that great compared to the Ace Hardware top soil and the Ace soil is only 4 cents more.  I then went back to Ace and bought 24 more bags.  It covered it pretty good, but I still need more.  I am going to buy some good garden soil, the Miracle Grow one and rake it around the whole garden too.   My seeds that I planted are really starting to grow good.  The pole beans are just growing crazy.  I just planted one of them in a bigger pot and put a stake in it.  I just looked and it has wrapped itself around the stick and is growing longer than the stick in just a couple of hours.

0051 I need a longer stake.

The tomato seed I planted were growing slowly.  I just went in the 0073room they are in to take a picture and the tomato plants looked like they got bigger too.  I just looked at them around 5 but they grew a lot since then.  See —->

I saw a tomato plant at Wal-Mart and bought it because I didn’t think they were going to do that good.  Maybe they decided to kick it up a notch because I brought the new guy home and put him on the table.  He said to them “Hey I am bigger than you, so I rule.”  They must have said “Well we will show him and they doubled in size.  Those little plants are starting to impress me.  They even grew fuzzies  on their stem.  0031

<—See fuzzies.  This is on a bigger tomato plant that I am growing.  He is doing Great.

I even bought 2 pepper plants today, because my pepper plants that I planted did’nt look too great but tonight they are starting to do better too.

Little bird. (Cedar Waxwing)

Saturday morning, right at breakfast time there was a loud thump on the window.  Something hit the window pretty hard.  My husband said “What was that?”  He got up from the table and looked outside.  There was a bird on the ground.  He had hit the window and fell down on our patio.  024He was laying on his back, not moving.  I ran and put on my gloves and went outside.  He was very still.

I picked it up gently.  0281

I sat down on the grass and let him sit on my hand.  I think he was dazed.032

I just sat there and he just sat there.  I told him it was ok, he just knocked himself out.  He was safe with me.  He still just sat there.

I took him to my backyard and put him on the deck.  All his bird friends were flying around.  I have these Holly bushes with red berries.  They like to dive into the bushes and eat the berries.

033He sat there for a while.  I sat right beside him.

He looked around but he didn’t move.034

I was worried about the little bird.  He just sat there.  He finally just took off and flew awy.

Saturday Wordzzle Challenge week 46

Views from Ravens nest  click this for details on how to play.

This weeks10 Word Challenge is: air tight seal, bitter cold, draft card, diner, paragon of virtue, broken computer monitor, CPR, a love of folk music, scatter-brained, can of worms

She was sitting in her CPR class at work.  She didn’t want to be there because she felt scatter-brained at the moment.  Before work she wanted to seal the meat she bought in those containers that give you an air tight seal before it spoiled.  She ran outside  into the bitter cold and saw an envelope sitting on the seat of her car that she had opened by accident, it was a draft card that was sent to the wrong address.  “Sorry I opened it” she thought, “I am no paragon of  virtue.  The reason she was leaving earlier than usual is because of her broken computer monitor.  She wanted to check her email and then she remembered she wanted to go fishing after work, so she must stop and get that can of worms after she stopped off at the diner.  She also had a love of folk music, so she had to remember to buy those tickets to the folk music festival too.

Friday Flash 55

“Bartender, make me a strong drink, Long Island Ice tea.”  It was a tough week at work.  Friday was the time to unwind.  She told the bartenter, “I got a new red bra on.”  He  set a really tall drink in front of her.  “You have a red bra on?” he asked.  “Yeah, wanna see?”

If you want to write a  Friday Flash 55, go here.

Rocky Point

When I was dating my husband, we would go on road trips.  We once went to Organ Pipe  Cactus National Monument.  Organ Pipe is at the bottom of the state of Arizona, right on the Mexican border.  we would stay in the campground.  The campground is covered in cactus.  They have a camp space covered in concrete, but all around the concrete are different cactus.  The famous Saguaro cacti grows there.  It is a beautiful cactus, tall and has arms that stick out.

We would go hiking around all the trails or drive around them.  You never want to go in the summer time, it is very hot there.  It does get really cold there in December.  It is nice at the first half of November.  It it nice up to Thanksgiving and then like a switch, it turns cold at night.  Anyway we wanted to drive over in Mexico.  We had a gun in our truck because you are so close to the border, just for protection.  We never even got it out.  We asked the border patrol, if we wanted to drive over into Mexico, do they have a lock box that you can put your gun in.  It is illegal to bring a gun into Mexico.  If they stop you and search your car, you will get arrested.  They didn’t have a place to put the gun.  They told us to just go out in the desert and bury it.  We drove off this desert road and you have to remember where you went.  It all looks alike.  I think I draw a little map to it.  We went off into the desert, put our gun in a plastic baggie and dug a hole and buried it in the ground by a big cactus.  We then went and got some insurance for our vehicle, I think you can buy it for one day.  We then drove over into Mexico.  You have to stop at their vehicle inspection station.  They want to look in your car.  We had a truck with a topper on the back full of our camping stuff.  We had a foam bed to lay on and all the stuff was under it.  Clothes, Coleman stove, water, probably gold panning equipment, we used to look for gold.  Anyway it was stuffed, to the max.  The Mexican border guard said to open up the back and we did.  He asked what all that stuff was and we told him.  He didn’t want to pull it all out so he said, “OK, go on.”  We then drove about 100 miles to Rocky Point.  It is a small town.  We got out and walked around and had a Corona beer and we found this little stand that made fish tacos.  It was this woman making them right there on the sidewalk with her grill and ice chest.  It was the best fish tacos I have ever eaten.  I had this mink vest on.  It was kind of cold.  I had gotten this vest at a store like Big Lots, that was way way marked down.  It was so pretty though, all out of mink.  I think the Mexicans all thought I was rich.  It was like $30 for that vest.  We walked all around and looked into the little shops and went into this restaurant on the water and had a margarita.  We then bought a metal sun and then drove back to Arizona.  It was an absolute wonderful day.  We had no problem getting back over the border.  We then went and found our gun and dug it up.  It was still there.
